She Asked “Where Are You God?” And He Answered

When I was in seventh grade I went to a very expensive private school that my dad paid for me to attend. My parents were divorced and I lived with my mom at the time. She was not rich and I did not have the expensive wardrobe of the other kids at this school. I was the new kid, frizzy hair, acne, mouth full of braces and plain clothes. I was teased mercilessly on a daily basis and had no friends. No one ate lunch with me. I was the butt of every joke. I was verbally bullied on the school bus home by an eighth grade girl who resented the longer trip home she had to take to accommodate my stop.

 

One day toward the end of that school year I arrived at the school only to turn around and walk the ten miles home. Along the way I was crying about my situation and I looked up to the sky and wondered “God, where are you?”

 

I did not expect an answer, I was just venting. 

 

Not long after this it was spring break and I went to spend the week with my father. I tearfully told him how much I hated that school and he invited me to come live with him. A week later I was going to the local Catholic school and walking into the first Christian church I had ever entered in my life to my knowledge. My parents were not church goers and God was not something that was discussed ever in my life. We did not pray. My mom attended a Unitarian church that was more of a public forum for idea exchanges and I remember listening to an Atheist preacher on several occasions give sermons on why believing in God is ridiculous. 

 

So as I was walking into this real Christian church – for the first time in my life – and just as my feet crossed the threshold of the front doors – I felt a huge embrace of love and I heard God say to me “I am here” and then I remembered that I had asked that question on my tearful walk home from school. 

 

After this experience I asked to get baptized. 

 

Now I go to daily mass and thank God all the time for this Amazing Grace that made me a believer.
